Social Media Is About Talking To People
Most people are using social media platforms as distribution channels for content that they have produced elsewhere. They share a piece of content and wait for comments. Sometimes the comments don’t come, but they continue trying. We like to share pieces of content that we believe our friends will appreciate. We may do so to ‘break the news’, or it could be share something that has surprised us. Sometimes we get comments and sometimes we don’t. The posts that attract the most attention are death notices, weddings, birthdays, and graduations. Many people appreciate special occasions.
Social media is people. People want to have a conversation. They want to express their opinions. If you want more engagement with people, you need to ask more questions. The questions are more important than the answers. The questions help the brain to start thinking. Without questions, the mind remains idle, but with questions, the neurons go into overdrive. I like questions because they challenge our preconceived religious and political biases. We become better people when we welcome questions. If I ask you an awkward question, you do not have to answer it; you can ask a counter question or think again about your beliefs.
So my question is: do you think social media is a waste of time?
